Power Plant

Power PlantThe Redwood Falls Public Utilities Power Plant is responsible for operating and maintaining five electric generators, which the City of Redwood Falls currently leases to Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency.  The five generators have a nameplate rating of 14 Megawatt which allows the City to maintain electrical service during times when transmission service is unavailable.

In 2012, the City Council authorized  the replacement of the old 1926 hydro electric turbine.  This process should be completed in the fall of 2013, which will allow the City of Redwood Falls to generate power by using the water which flows in the Redwood River.  The new generator will be able to generate 500 KW and it is estimated  it will produce around 1.5 million kilowatt hours a year, which is enough to power 125 homes for the year.
