2022 FALL CLEANUP
Fall Cleanup in Redwood Falls is scheduled for the week of October 31 to November 4, 2022. During this week, residents may place leaves and garden waste in the street for pick up. To assist with the cleanup, residents are asked to place their leaves and garden waste in a wind-row one foot from the curb (no bags or containers) and are asked not to rake leaves into the street ahead of the scheduled day. Leaf piles in streets are a traffic hazard and when washed into the storm sewer when it rains adds to flooding and water backup problems. Tree limbs and branches will not be permitted. Any debris, other than leaves or garden waste (items that can be composted), will not be picked up.
Clean Streets for Clean Water!
In urban areas, stormwater carries phosphorus and other pollutants into Minnesota’s lakes, rivers and wetlands through the storm sewer system. Unlike our household wastewater, stormwater does not go through a treatment plant first. Here in Redwood Falls, curbside storm drains can transport grass clippings and leaves (along with other street debris and dirt) to the Minnesota River, Redwood River, Lake Redwood, Ramsey Creek, drainage ditches and nearby wetlands.
Summer-Fall Clean Water Tips
•Have a storm drain near your home? Act as its guardian and keep it free of litter and leaves.
•Continue to rake or sweep tree leaves and grass clipping from streets, driveways, and sidewalks, and dispose of the City’s compost site. Never dispose leaves or grass clippings along shoreland, in ravines, in drainage ditches, or in wetlands; it is unlawful and in violation of the City Code 7.07, Sub 4.
•If leaves are less than two inches thick on your lawn, consider mulching them in place by making several passes with a power mower. Your lawn will look raked, and the shredded leaves will provide nutrients back into your lawn.
•Fall is the best season to fertilize your lawn and control common weeds. Weed and feed responsibly. Use fertilizers and pesticides only as needed and always read and follow product instructions.
•Be phosphorus conscious! Minnesota’s Phosphorus Lawn Fertilizer Law requires the use of phosphorus-free fertilizer on established lawns unless soil testing shows a need for phosphorus. Re-establish vegetation on bare soil spots.
•Pick up and properly dispose of pet waste to prevent not only nutrients but also
harmful bacteria from reaching our local lakes rivers and streams.
